An Adult Evening of Shel Silverstein by Shel Silverstein

Synopsis
Welcome to the darkly comic world of Shel Silverstein, a world where nothing is as it seems and where the most
innocent conversation can turn menacing in an instant. The plays in this collection range widely in content, but
the style is unmistakable.

Breakdown
Males & Females - 18 & Above Only

ONE TENNIS SHOE
Harvey needs to broach a delicate subject with his wife, Sylvia, concerning some of her disturbing habit.

HARVEY (M) – A young man early in his marriage, insecure about facing off with his wife.  Think of a young
Woody Allen.
SYLVIA (F) -  A young woman early in her marriage.  Sylvia seems to be a normal young woman, but has some
odd habits.  Is defensive and possessive.

THE BEST DADDY.
Lisa's got the best daddy in the world. After all, he bought her a pony for her birthday. Too bad he shot it dead.
Or did he?

LISA (F) – Casting an adult to play a 12-14 year old girl.  Lisa is an emotional and naïve teenage girl.
DADDY (M) – Either the best or the worst dad you can possibly imagine.  Up to you.

THE LIFEBOAT IS SINKING
Jen and Sherwin sit safely on their bed, but Jen forces her husband to imagine they are on a sinking boat in the
middle of a terrible storm.

JEN (F) – Jen is a woman in her late 20’s or early 30’s, married with a young daughter.  Jen is creative, quick-
thinking, and demanding.

SHERWIN (M) – Sherwin is a man in his late 20’s or early 30’s, married with a young daughter.  Sherwin is torn
between feelings for his wife and his mother and is noncommittal in making a decision.

SMILE
Bender and his henchmen drag Gibby into a room and throw him to the ground. Gibby protests that he hasn't
done anything wrong, but Bender and the others know better. They have found the man responsible for the '70s
smiley face and the phrase "Have a nice day," and they're going to make him pay.

SNOOKY (M/F) - Not the Jersey Shore Character (although that may be a strong character choice).  Snooky is
one of the gangsters who got their hands on the “Have a Nice Day” originator
BENDER (M/F) – Gangster boss.  Bender is slightly less hot-headed than his/her gangster thugs, but still has a
strange obsession with 70’s catch-phrases
JIMBO (M/F) – Hot headed, Jimbo is one of the gangsters who got their hands on the “Have a Nice Day”
originator
GIBBY (M/F) – Gibby is a graphic designer and was unknowingly responsible for the “Have a Nice Day” logo
and phrase, or was he/she?

WASH AND DRY
Marianne stops by the laundromat, but she's horrified to discover that her laundry hasn't been cleaned.

MARIANNE (F) – A young female who believes in justice and just wants her laundry done.  Believes in standing
up for injustice
GEORGE (M) – A Laundromat owner who takes his own bitter feelings of life out on all his customers,
supposedly “teaching them a lesson”

THINKING UP A NEW NAME FOR THE ACT
Pete hits on the phrase "Meat and Potatoes" as the perfect name for their vaudeville act, but Lucy doesn't like it.
The only words in this farcical sketch are "Meat and Potatoes."

Note: This sketch is the ultimate acting exercise.  The only dialogue in the sketch is “Meat and Potatoes” repeated
over, but it plays out like an entire Law & Order Episode

PETE / FIRST GUARD(M) – A down-on-his-luck Vaudeville actor who thinks he has struck a genius idea.  He is
chauvinistic and uses brute force to persuade Lucy.
LUCY (F) – Girlfriend to Pete.  Lucy does not appreciate Pete’s new idea or his attitude.
INSPECTOR /  JUDGE / SECOND GUARD (M/F) – Male or female.  Ability to do farce and portray several
characters with limited text.
SERGEANT / PROSECUTOR / EXECUTIONER  (M/F) – Male or female.  Ability to do farce and portray several
characters with limited text.
BAILIFF / CLERGYMAN (M/F) - – Male or female.  Ability to do farce and portray several characters with
limited text.

BLIND WILLIE AND THE TALKING DOG
Blind Willie sings the blues and asks passersby if they can spare a nickel or dime to help him and his hungry dog.
But his dog can't understand why Willie refuses to use the fact that he owns a talking dog to make some real
money.

BLIND WILLIE (M) – A blues singing, blind hobo.  Despite his circumstances, Willie is stubborn and wants to
build his career his own way.  Ability to play harmonica a plus!
Barney (M/F) – The world’s only talking dog.
